Lisa Tobias and her team have been designing custom kitchens in NJ for almost 20 years now. We have learned a few things over those years and wish to share some of our insights on the smartest ways to organize your thoughts when designing a kitchen. Some customers come to us with a folder filled with notes and pictures while others have a fully mapped out floor plan. Everyone is a little different in how to approach a kitchen renovation project. Our hope here is to provide an outline to guide you through the steps we may take you through.
Smart Kitchen Design
This post is more about how to organize your thoughts when designing a kitchen. We may discuss smart kitchen appliances and integrating home assistants into your plan during the design process but if you are looking for information on:
One of the first exercise we ask customers to do is to:
Create a Wishlist

Everyone has a list of “Must Have” kitchen elements that they have been dreaming about. Start with a mind map of all the ideas that are top of mind for you. Let’s put all the ideas that have been occupying your thoughts down on paper. It can be anything from
custom range hoods, a backsplash that caught your attention, a
double island kitchen layout you fell in love with or simply a storage solution that you absolutely must have.
Decide How Much You Wish to Invest
We can always work our way back to this decision but it is best to understand your what your budget is upfront. If you are looking at
high end kitchen appliances as part of this makeover, chances are you have priced out a few you desire. We will need to know realistically how much you are willing to spend on this project before we get to material selections. So have a number in mind and we can discuss options for you or take a harder look at your wish list.
Consider How You Plan on Using Your Kitchen
Homeowners are demanding much more from our kitchens today than ever before. The Pandemic added a new layer with employees and students now working virtually. Many of you have learned to bake and prepare meals in a whole new way. We also ask you to think about “whom” as well as “how” the kitchen is being used. Perhaps someone with mobility challenges has joined you? And a
roll under stovetop would help out? We encourage you to make some notes and share those with your designer.
Let’s Take Some Measurements

Any
kitchen design company in NJ will need to know the dimensions of the space we are working with. As well as the measurements of the surrounding rooms. A good kitchen layout with solid measurements is at the foundation of any remodeling plan. It is often at this stage a customer invites us to their home and together we can visualize the space and take some solid measurements. But it is important to have an idea before we meet for the first time. Are the adjoining rooms opportunities to expand your kitchen space? Think about this. Existing formal dining rooms are being transformed all the time today.
From these actual measurements and information, we can develop a kitchen layout and floor plan that makes good use of the available space. For example, this
I Shaped Kitchen Island was designed specifically to accommodate a family of 4 and storage for small appliances and school supplies.
Custom Kitchens & The Following Steps We Take
All these steps above you can start before we meet, or we can tackle them together. You decide how involved you wish to be in the design process. Some of the following tasks we will need to work through are:
- Cabinetry Ideas and Selections
- Your Big Appliances
- The Color Scheme
- Islands, Workspace & Dining Options
- Storage Space & The Pantry
- Lighting & Flooring Selections
We will need at least a little guidance on your preferences on the above kitchen design elements in order to put together a comprehensive kitchen design plan. So try to give these items some thought before sitting with your designer.
